Enclave surnames are traditionally matronymic, with the surname taken from the biological mother's name with a possessive suffix. Some however consider the matronymic convention backward and outdated, and instead base their surname on occupation. This is a somewhat recent thing, so currently most who do this tend to have made the decision upon adulthood, so choose their own occupation, though second generation followers of this convention exist who use the surname of their parents.
